The Human Spirit

"You cannot define yourself.

LABELS AND EGOTISTICAL DESIRES
WILL NEVER GRANT YOU
THE PLEASURE OF TRULY KNOWING YOURSELF.

“He who defines himself can’t know who he really is.”
“He who has power over others can’t empower himself.”
“He who tries to shine dims his own light.”

LAO TZU

That's in the superficial thinking perception.

The superficial thinking perception
creates its own definition through thinking
not through reality, but through thinking.

And then that thinking becomes reality.

You see?

You assume from the mind that you experience reality
and then your thinking defines it, describes it
so that there is order.

But the truth is it is the thinking itself
which is creating the reality.

I'm not saying the physical world is not real.
But your perception, your mental perception,
how you experience yourself in the world
lies only in thought.

It's deeply ingrained.

And with this thinking reality
you assume this is what you are.
And from this false assumption
you try to be free of it!

But what you need to be free of,
is the false assumption
which is constantly reinforcing itself

All that mental chatter
its reinforcing this thinking-reality.
Its reinforcing this thinking to be reality.
'I am John, I am a carpenter
this is my wife, this is my mother,
this is my dog, this is what I like this is what I don't like,
this is my house, this is my body. I like olives, not cherries."

The thoughts themselves are not false.

That sense of me is not false.
But it only exists in the mental realm.
That is one level of experience.

So that assumption
that the thinking is reality
has to be seen through,
has to be broken.

So there are all the meditation techniques
to help get past this assumption;
to allow your attention
to loosen its grip on thought
so that it can perceive this moment
without perceiving it through thought.

Which means without perceiving it
through definition, description judgment,
commentary.
To directly experience this moment.

When attention
directly experiences this moment,
it experiences itself.

Isn't that delightful?

Because when attention is freed
from being bound by mental perception,
all that is left is attention.
Not personal attention,
because personal attention is mental perception.

Consciousness is
all there is:

Shame
Just a step above death.
You’re probably contemplating suicide at this level.
Think of this as self-directed hatred.
Despising, Miserable, Humiliation, Elimination.

Guilt
A step above shame,
but you still may be having thoughts of suicide.
You think of yourself as a sinner, unable to forgive yourself for past transgressions.
Vindictive, Evil, Blame, Destruction

Apathy
Feeling hopeless or victimized.
The state of learned helplessness.
Many homeless people are stuck here.
Condemning, Hopeless, Despair, Abdication.

Grief
A state of perpetual sadness and loss.
You might drop down here after losing a loved one.
Depression. Still higher than apathy, since you’re beginning to escape the numbness.
Disdainful, Tragic, Regret, Despondency.

If the
warrior

does not feel alone and sad,
then he or she can be corrupted very easily.

In fact, such a person may not be a warrior at all.

To be a good warrior,
one has to feel sad and lonely,
but rich and resourceful at the same time.

This makes the warrior sensitive
to every aspect of phenomena:
to sights, smells, sounds, and feelings.

In that sense,
the warrior is also an artist,
appreciating whatever goes on in the world.

Everything is extremely vivid.

The rustling of your armor
or the sound of rain drops falling on your coat is very loud.
The fluttering of occasional butterflies around you
is almost an insult,
because you
are so

sensitive.

– Chögyam Trungpa

from

 the book

 "Smile at Fear:
Awakening the True Heart of Bravery"

Fear
Seeing the world as dangerous and unsafe.
Usually you’ll need help to rise above this level,
or you’ll remain trapped for a long time, such as in an abusive relationship.
Punitive, Frightening, Anxiety, Withdrawal.

Seven Most Powerful Fears

By Dr. Paul Haider

Fear #1 – The fear of not getting what we want.

When we do get what we want in life we become sad, depressed, and that sadness comes from the fact that we are always fearful of not getting something, someone, or having some situation not work out… thus that fear keeps us from attaining true bliss, peace, and having true love within. No one ever said we would have what we want, all the great guru’s, saints, and teachers of the world came to say — as the sparrow you will have what you need, you will not be forgotten. Do not allow that little voice of lack to fill that void in your heart. That voice is not true! The truth is you can move mountains with less than a glance! You can do more than you think if you harken to the one spirit within and know you are unstoppable.

Fear #2 – The fear of getting something other than what we want.

Then when we get something and we are not happy, we are upset because we are in total fear of having something in our life show up that might not be exactly what we want. Thus we never attain that simple state of peace. If you just got married and were in a total state of love would you be thinking about fear? Of course not… and that state of love is exactly the state of energy we need to be in at all times… to break free of fear and have everything. Keep love in your heart instead of fear and everything will be great!

Fear #3 – The fear of having pain instead of pleasure.

Every one of us wants pleasure, but trying to stay away from pain makes us do just about anything to keep from suffering. And without some suffering we never understand the soul… and thus everything boils down to being in fear. It’s a vicious circle of trying to stay away from pain… instead of living in a state of love, bliss, and peace.

Fear #4 – The fear of needing to be in the past.

Every time we go back to the past and think “IF ONLY” we are in a state of fear. And fear keeps us caught in a cycle of karma that’s impossible to break until we understand the past has no bearing on the here-and-now. That if we did something wrong in the past… we must let it go in order to have peace. Otherwise the cycle of continues and we attract into our life more suffering. Thus living in bliss sets us free, to see the world as great no matter what we have going on.

Fear #5 – The fear of needing to be in the future.

When we are thinking about what might come, or what may happen, we are substituting fear for love… and the outcome can be nothing less than tragic. That creates a state of fear which is driven by ego, a place of wanting to know, a place of needing, instead of allowing the future to unfold and accepting everything. That does not mean never taking action, there are three levels of energy… the first being love and doing what we need to do from a place of love. The second being taking action with love in mind, thus we can create a better world. And the third is fear… living from this low vibration drags us down into the depths of despair.

Fear #6 – The fear of not understanding.

Have you ever met someone who had to know everything? And had to make sense of it all? That’s fear… a fear of needing to make sense of the world when many times the world doesn’t make any sense at all. Trying to think the world straight is a type of fear. We can’t think anything straight, we first have to accept what happened, forgive what happened, and then move on… which is action. Thus forgiving is a process of love and action. Thus we are free of all the suffering associated with trying to make logical sense of the world… and thus peace, love, and bliss filter in.

Fear #7 – The fear derived from craving anything.

When we want something… and I mean anything… it brings about a whirlpool of emptiness in our heart… and that emptiness creates a longing to have this or that. Of course there is no peace of any kind in being empty hearted. All we have to do is fill that void with love as did Jesus, Buddha, Krishna… and all the rest of the avatars who moved Million people at a glance, changing their lives forever. And love is what we need… not fears from cravings, fears derived from wants, not fear derived from emptiness, we are so much more than fear… WE ARE THE GAME CHANGER – WE ARE LOVE.

Thus when we find the source of all fears… we find the source of all reality… which stems from…our lack of understanding about our true self… One with the Tao, the Universe.

Desire
Not to be confused with setting and achieving goals,
this is the level of addiction, craving, and lust — for money,
approval, power, fame, etc. Consumerism. Materialism.
This is the level of smoking and drinking and doing drugs.
Denying, Disappointment, Graving, Enslavement.

The Warrior´s view:
"Denying yourself is an indulgence and
I don't recommend anything of the kind.
The indulgence of denying is by far the worst;
it forces us to believe we are doing great things,
when in effect we are only
 fixed within ourselves."

Anger
the level of frustration,
often from not having your desires met at the lower level.
This level can spur you to action at higher levels, or it can keep you stuck in hatred.
In an abusive relationship, you’ll often see an anger person coupled with a fear person.
Vengeful, Antagonistic, Hate, Aggression.

Pride
The first level where you start to feel good,
but it’s a false feeling. It’s dependent on external circumstances (money, prestige, etc),
so it’s vulnerable. Pride can lead to nationalism, racism, and religious wars.
Think Nazis. A state of irrational denial and defensiveness.
Religious fundamentalism is also stuck at this level.
You become so closely enmeshed in your beliefs
that you see an attack on your beliefs as an attack on you.
Indifferent, Demanding, Scorn, Inflation.

Courage
The first level of true strength.
I’ve made a previous post about this level: Courage is the Gateway.
This is where you start to see life as challenging and exciting instead of overwhelming.
You begin to have an inkling of interest in personal growth, although at this level you’ll probably call it something else like skill-building, career advancement, education, etc.
You start to see your future as an improvement upon your past,
rather than a continuation of the same.
Permitting. Feasable, Affirmation, Empowerment.

Neutrality
This level is epitomized by the phrase, “live and let live.”
It’s flexible, relaxed, and unattached. Whatever happens, you roll with the punches.
You don’t have anything to prove. You feel safe and get along well with other people.
A lot of self-employed people are at this level. A very comfortable place.
The level of complacency and laziness. You’re taking care of your needs,
but you don’t push yourself too hard.
Enabling, Satisfactory, Trust, Release.

Willingness
Now that you’re basically safe and comfortable,
you start using your energy more effectively. Just getting by isn’t good enough anymore.
You begin caring about doing a good job — perhaps even your best.
You think about time management and productivity and getting organized,
things that weren’t so important to you at the level of neutrality.

Think of this level as the development of willpower and self-discipline.
These people are the “troopers” of society; they get things done well and don’t complain much. If you’re in school, then you’re a really good student;
you take your studies seriously and put in the time to do a good job.
This is the point where your consciousness becomes more organized and disciplined.
Inspiring, Hopeful, Optimism, Intention.

Acceptance
Now a powerful shift happens,
and you awaken to the possibilities of living proactively.
At the level of willingness you’ve become competent,
and now you want to put your abilities to good use.

This is the level of setting and achieving goals.
I don’t like the label “acceptance” that Hawkins uses here,
but it basically means that you begin accepting responsibility for your role in the world.
If something isn’t right about your life (your career, your health, your relationship), you define your desired outcome and change it. You start to see the big picture of your life more clearly. This level drives many people to switch careers, start a new business, or change their diets.
Merciful, Harmonous, Forgiveness, Transcendence.

Reason
At this level you transcend the emotional aspects
of the lower levels and begin to think clearly and rationally.
Hawkins defines this as the level of medicine and science.
The way I see it, when you reach this level, you become capable of using your
reasoning abilities to their fullest extent.
You now have the discipline and the proactivity to fully exploit your natural abilities.

You’ve reached the point where you say,
“Wow. I can do all this stuff, and I know I must put it to good use.
So what’s the best use of my talents?”

You take a look around the world and start making meaningful contributions.
At the very high end, this is the level of Einstein and Freud.
It’s probably obvious that most people never reach this level in their entire lives.
Wise, Meaningful, Understanding, Abstraction.

 It’s unconditional love,
a permanent understanding of your connectedness with all that exists.
Think compassion. At the level of reason, you live in service to your head.
But that eventually becomes a dead end where you fall into the trap of over-intellectualizing.
You see that you need a bigger context than just thinking for its own sake.

At the level of love, you now place your head and all your other talents
and abilities in service to your heart (not your emotions,
but your greater sense of right and wrong — your conscience).
I see this as the level of awakening to your true purpose.
Your motives at this level are pure and uncorrupted by the desires of the ego.

This is the level of lifetime service to humanity.
Think Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Dr. Albert Schweitzer.
At this level you also begin to be guided by a force greater than yourself.
It’s a feeling of letting go. Your intuition becomes extremely strong.
Hawkins claims this level is reached only by 1 in 250 people during their entire lifetimes.
Loving, Benign, Reverence, Revelation.

Joy
A state of pervasive, unshakable happiness.
Eckhart Tolle describes this state in The Power of Now.
The level of saints and advanced spiritual teachers.
Just being around people at this level makes you feel incredible.
At this level life is fully guided by synchronicity and intuition.
There’s no more need to set goals and make detailed plans —
the expansion of your consciousness allows you to operate at a much higher level.

A near-death experience can temporarily bump you to this level.
One, Complete, Serenity, Transfiguration.

Peace and total transcendence.
Hawkins claims this level is reached only by one person in 10 million.
Allbeing, Perfect, Bliss, Illumination.

Enlightenment
The highest level of human consciousness,
where humanity blends with divinity. Extremely rare.
The level of Krishna, Buddha, and Jesus.
Even just thinking about people at this level can raise your consciousness.
Self, Is, Ineffable, Pure Consciousness.

Consciousness is
 everywhere and everything.

And that is you.
You are that consciousness.

It is in this
we are one.
